What is Clicker Training?

Clicker training is a positive reinforcement method that uses a click sound or specific word to mark desired behaviors, signaling to the dog that a reward is coming. This clear, immediate feedback helps dogs learn quickly and effectively.

When I worked at an aquarium, I learned how to train marine mammals of all sizes. I never forced them to do what I wanted—not only would that have been ineffective, but it could have been dangerous. If animals in zoos and aquariums can be trained without force, why shouldn’t we train our dogs the same way? The good news is, we can! The same science and methodology used for marine mammals apply to dogs—it’s called clicker training.

Clicker training focuses on observing and rewarding good choices rather than punishing unwanted behaviors. By reinforcing what we like, we encourage dogs to repeat those behaviors, creating a cooperative and engaged learner. This approach not only strengthens training but also deepens the bond between dogs and their guardians.

With a clicker, you can teach foundation skills like sit, down, stay, and come, as well as advanced behaviors such as settling on a mat, polite leash walking, and even cooperative care (consent-based handling). Clicker training is also highly effective for reducing reactivity, building confidence, and reinforcing calmness. Because the click provides instant, clear feedback, dogs learn quickly and with enthusiasm.

Over time, as your dog reliably responds to cues, the clicker can be phased out—but the trust and communication it builds will last a lifetime.
